Why Stabilised Handles Matter (and Why We Do It All Ourselves)

When you invest in a kitchen knife, you're not just buying something sharp — you're choosing a tool you’ll reach for every day. That’s why at Lady Made Tools, we put just as much care into our handles as we do our blades. One of the secrets behind our signature handles? They’re stabilised — and yes, we do all the stabilising ourselves, right here in-house.

So, what is stabilisation exactly?
It’s a process where natural timber is first fully dried — sometimes this alone can take months, especially when working with dense Tasmanian timbers. Once the wood is ready, we place it in a vacuum chamber and infuse it with resin under vacuum pressure. This resin fills every little pore in the wood, replacing the moisture and adding strength. After curing, what you're left with is a beautifully enhanced, super durable handle that won’t shrink, crack, or warp over time.

But what does this mean for your kitchen?
It means your knife won’t just look stunning — it’ll stay that way. The handle will feel solid and secure in your hand whether you're slicing tomatoes or carving roast veggies. It also holds up beautifully to the changing temperature and moisture in a kitchen, making it a practical and lasting choice for everyday use.

We do all of our stabilising ourselves because it allows us to select, prep, and treat each piece of timber with care. We know exactly where it’s come from, how it’s been treated, and how it’ll perform in your hands.

So next time you reach for your knife, know that there’s a whole lot of care packed into that handle — and it’s designed to last a lifetime.
